John DUsJohn McMullen:  First and foremost I am the father to an amazing girl who is the center of my universe.  My wife, Maria, is my business partner, lifeline and biggest supporter; but most of all, my best friend.  I am a mountain biker, triathlete and a passionate CrossFitter.  I can’t get enough of any sort of physical activity and if there is an event which gets my heart racing, I want to be a part of it.  I have a passion for fitness and want to share my passion through CrossFit Beverly. I was introduced to CrossFit in April 2008, after that discovery I was flabbergasted how through all my training I hadn’t heard of CrossFit sooner.  I started incorporating CrossFit into my endurance training as a supplement to the LSD (Long Slow Distance) training for triathlons and cross country mountain bike races.  CrossFit is now my only source of training for any event weather it be a triathlon or just getting up for work.  CrossFit has changed my life that is why I brought it to the Beverly, Morgan Park and Mt. Greenwood communities.
“…Because I want my clients’ training experience to transcend the physical realm, I am obligated to understand their jobs, hobbies, families, and goals. Motivating clients to transcend fitness requires that I be involved in their lives. This isn’t going to happen without my being both interested in them and interesting to them. Indeed, I am a personal friend to nearly every one of my clients. This is extremely gratifying work and often emotionally charged, but that’s all right because I am an integral part of my athlete’s lives, and life is full of laughter, tears, and hope.”-Coach Greg Glassman Founder and CEO, CrossFit Inc.

Shawn Coffey United States Marine. Father. Husband. Teacher. Coach.

I like to tell people that 60 pounds ago (and 25 years) I was one of the fastest cross country and track athletes in the state of Illinois, I excelled physically during my time in the United States Marine Corps where I won awards and commendations for my performance of duties. Then life happened. You put on a few pounds, slow down a bit, and become complacent. I had lost my edge. Then came Crossfit.

I discovered Crossfit in the fall of 2012 while training for my second marathon that year.  My daughter Madalynn and I were watching the CrossFit Games on ESPN and a quick Google search led me to Crossfit Beverly. My journey with Crossfit and Crossfit Beverly has been humbling, challenging, and extremely rewarding. Beyond the benefits of improved physical performance and physical appearance, Crossfit Beverly has provided my family and I with love and support that is immeasurable.

The love and support from the community of CFB is what drives me everyday to be a better athlete and it is what drove me to be a coach; I wanted to give back to the community that gave so much of themselves. My intentions as a coach are as follows:

1.     To support the athletes of CFB.
2.     To ensure the safety of the athletes of CFB.
3.     To hurl supportive obscenities at the athletes of CFB. (you can take this out…. But it is me…..!!
4.     To challenge the mental and physical boundaries of the athletes of CFB.
5.     To listen to the athletes of CFB so that I can continually improve my coaching practice.

I look forward to seeing you at the box and look forward to serving you as your coach!

Julie_OHS-copyJulie Gustis: Coming from the world of figure and bodybuilding competitions, CrossFit was a bit of a change, and every day evolves into something more for me.  I was always a gym rat, playing sports all my life, and then as I was preparing for two figure competitions, I was in the gym every day-back and biceps, chest and triceps, etc.  It was mundane, and when it came time to lean out and drop fat, I had to turn into the cardio bunny (I despise cardio, and running, and yes you will hear me grumble whenever we have a WOD with running in it.)  I had heard about CrossFit in the fall of 2011, after seeing the CrossFit Games on TV. After attempting a few of the WOD’s from CrossFit.com on my own, I stumbled upon CrossFit Beverly.  I went in and tried the free class, and. Was. Hooked.  You mean to tell me, I can combine weightlifting, cardio, HIIT (high intensity interval training), all in one, in an hour’s time?  You mean I don’t have to spend countless hours in the gym doing bicep curls and tricep pull-downs?  Sign. Me Up.  I received my Level 1 certificate in December 2012 and I love coaching.  The best part is when an athlete accomplishes a movement they have been working on for a while, i.e. kipping pull up or Olympic lift.  It’s like a proud mom moment when a child takes their first steps….seriously, it’s that cool (Or I imagine so, as I don’t have kids).   I will always be encouraging you during the WOD.  I will not let you quit, unless you puke, are about to faint, or die, you WILL NOT quit if I’m there.  I might break out and start dancing randomly during a WOD (usually only when coaching or as a bystander).  I will be your biggest cheerleader and advice columnist on why you should keep coming back every single day.  I will keep you honest by making sure you are moving well and properly, and will help you realize your dreams and goals, because there is no reason you can’t reach them.  All in all, I’m a fun gal who loves what she does.

Dave-CoachingDave Maroney: I am a retired police officer from the Illinois State Police and spent 4 years in the Marine Corps Reserve.  I have always strived to maintain the best level of fitness possible, not only for the performance of my duties, but for general health reasons as well.  I received my CF Level I (CF-LI) Trainer Certificate in December 2012, and have been coaching ever since. It was while running one day in early 2012 that I decided to stop in at CrossFit Beverly when it was located at 109th and Western Avenue to see what it was all about.  I had no idea that I was walking into something that I would not only grow to love, but something that would also give me so much in return. The best thing about CrossFit for me, both as an athlete and coach, is the fact that you are surrounded by people of all shapes, sizes, ages, backgrounds, and abilities who come together for the same purpose- self improvement, and CrossFit offers the opportunity to do this.  All you need is a positive attitude, a willingness to listen and learn, and a strong desire to do your best each and every day, recognizing that some days will be better than others. This stuff is addicting, rewarding, and is the hardest fun you will ever have!

image-1Sam Carreon: I’ve been fortunate enough to compete in and try new sports my entire life.   Coming from an athletic family it was never a question if I’d compete in sport at a high level, but what? Growing up I played football, soccer, baseball, basketball. I practiced 3 years of Muay Thai training, and even participated in dance. My CrossFit journey started early in 2009. I was employed at Lifetime Fitness in Romeoville, Illinois as a “Fit Floor crew member”, better known as the cleaning all the machines, wipe down mirrors, take out trash, etc, guy. One day, while cleaning, I noticed our most intense Trainer(Rick James, lol), just working the guts out of a new client. Rick caught me staring and challenged me to try a session with his new client and him he next day. While I am always up for a challenge, I accepted. What I didn’t know was that he was incorporating CrossFit into those sessions for his client who was preparing to leave in 4 months for B.U.D.S training in Coronado, CA. to train as a Navy SEAL. Those 4 months flew by and I made tremendous progress in my own skills and training. However, it wasn’t until almost 3 years later, March 2012 when that client from Lifetime returned home for some brief time off that he introduced me with Crossfit.com, the CrossFit YouTube channel and pretty much all things CrossFit. I began researching and attempting to teach myself different movements. I didn’t step into my first “box” until August 2012. I was absolutely thrilled to be able to have actual coaches around me to help, along with the community aspect. Now, fast forward to 2014 I’ve been able to stay diligent, make consistent progress, and have a goal of competing at the Regional level in this sport that has changed my life.

Upside-down-AshAshley Ehlers:  I am an elementary school physical education teacher.  I love teaching kids about how getting fit can be fun.  I am probably the most energetic person that most people have ever met.  I have always loved using workouts as an outlet for my extra awesome energy.  I have been a runner since I was 12 years old, completing in anything from 800 meter races to marathons.  I was, without a doubt, an endurance junkie and didn’t think I would ever need anything else to stay fit.  I found CrossFit Beverly on April 15, 2013, when I was just so tired of the same old routine of working out and running, while no longer seeing any results in performance or changes in my body.  From the second I walked in, I knew right away that joining would be the most awesome decision I would ever make.  Within a few weeks, I started noticing awesome results, and then my running times began to get dramatically faster (and I was running less!) It was not just the workouts I fell in love with, it was all of awesome support I received from the other athletes.  Someone was always there to cheer me on and push me to be my best.  I have been hooked on CrossFit and the community ever since!  I am absolutely in love with wall balls, burpees, box jumps, and anything involving handstands! When the opportunity came, I immediately went to get my Level-1 CrossFit trainer certificate, followed by my CrossFit Kids certificate.  It is awesome to be an athlete at CrossFit Beverly, and I am so happy to be able to help kids make positive changes to their lives through CrossFit Kids.  Oh- and I say the word “awesome” about 1000x a day! IRENE CORNWELL (Red): My most important job in life is being a mother of three beautiful children who have now turned into amazing adults. I have been involved in sports my whole life and love explore new ones as I feel they are my outlet in life.   I joined the world of fitness in 1998 and have been involved ever since. I have taught everything that has been the rage with the evolving times from step class to Pilates to name a few. I love to help people change their lives and create a healthy journey for them. To me this is everything and I feel like this is why I exist. I love being a fitness coach. I received my National Certification in 1999 and have been involved in fitness ever since. My CrossFit journey began in 2009 and instantly fell in love with the ideology, the workouts, and most of all, the community. As an athlete and learned everything I could from some great coaches and I knew immediately I too wanted to be a Crossfit Coach to someday own my own Box. In 2013 my dreams became reality and my husband and I opened Crossfit Rua in Frankfort, Illinois. We were fortunate enough to plant roots and build a community with some of the best people I have ever met. After a long battle with colon cancer I lost my husband, John, December 23rd, 2016. He was one of the strongest people I know and he fought to the end like a junkyard dog.  After three long years of battling this demon, and losing him, I decided with a heavy heart to pass Rua on to someone who could continue our vision.  This decision was so very hard, but when I reached out to John at CrossFit Beverly he did not hesitate and welcomed me with open arms. My first day walking in to Crossfit Beverly I felt I was home again I am so excited to be a part of Beverly and also very thankful for everyone accepting me and welcoming me. I am very passionate about what I do and very excited about this new beginning.
