Wow!! What a day yesterday. A huge thank you to all who contributed, donated and participated in our “Battle For Brayden” WOD. The event was such a success and Brayden and his family are so grateful for everyones generosity with checks, cash and t-shirt sales. It really was a great day. We especially want to thank specifically, Beetle for bringing the fire engine, The People’s Coach for spearheading the State SWAT truck, Steve Rowling and John Lorenz for getting the CPD mounted police and creating the flyer, Mike Myren for creating the logo and t-shirt design, it really turned out well. Coffey and Curtis for helping tidy up and Julie & Maria for hunkering down and cleaning up the Box once everyone left. Erika did a great job running and organizing the event and deserves kudos for a job well done.
Unfortunately dodgeball in Michigan City has been canceled. We couldn’t get the required team numbers together to participate. Oh well maybe another time.
Next Sunday, May 17 is Lake Katherine’s “Break for the Lake 5K” CrossFit Beverly is a proud sponsor again this year. “Break for the Lake” is a 5k trail run through Lake Katherine Nature Center. This would be a great opportunity to do something different, run on trails and get off the road on a Sunday and support Gareth and Lake Katherine. Registration is $25. https://www.signmeup.com/site/online-event-registration/106193
I have heard that there is some chatter and maybe even complaining of so much back squatting. Let me preface that we have entered a strength phase of our annual training. The past few years we have done our strength work January to March. We mixed things up this year by going with a conditioning program in the winter to prep for the Open. We think that came with some success as the collective scores for CFB were quite respectable compared world wide. Once the Open ended we started our 12 week strength program. We are still incorporating Met Cons every day, but not the grinding bruisers you are used to on Wednesday and Friday. This cycle will end July 1 and we will return to the grinders on Wednesdays and Fridays. But in the meantime we would like your patients and understanding as we believe this is a highly effective program. Yes, it is hard, but I believe the reward will pay off. If adding 5 pounds is too hard, then try 2.5, or stay at this weight for another week before climbing.
The Sox game May 21 is open to all who want/can attend. We will be sitting in right field with an all you can eat and drink special. $40 get admission to the game and all you can eat/drink from 90 minutes before game to 30 minutes into the game. If you can not attend the pre-game, tickets to join us are $21 for the game. We have received payment from quite a few and we have sent messages to those who stated they want to attend. If you have not responded to our message or we do not have your money by tomorrow Monday May 11, we will assume you will not be attending any longer. We don’t want anyone left out but we have to get the tickets ordered.
We are again an official home for Forged®Memorial Day Murph Challenge. Save the date Monday May 25 for our 4th annual Memorial Day Murph Challenge and BBQ. I will be including some Murph prep workouts throughout the upcoming weeks. Look to the sidebar on the right for the Murph link to get registered and get yourself a snazzy T-shirt which sends proceeds to the Michael Murphy Scholarship Fund.
The box will be CLOSED Saturday and Sunday May 30-31 as we will be hosting a USAW Weight lifting seminar and certification. We will make arrangements for a Park WOD on Saturday, but no activities Sunday at the Box.
The Granite Games Qualifier has been scheduled to begin June 17 and we are signed up as an affiliate to start a community. This is a four week in house qualifier which will act just like the Open. Based on rank you may qualify to participate in the 2015 Granite Games in St. Cloud, MN. If you do not qualify but are an active participant you will have first dibs to sign up for the Open events (teams of 2 same gender) before registration opens to the public. If you enjoyed the Open and would like to see if you can qualify for a more regional event The Granite Games is a great proving ground. For those of us who went last year we were fortunate to rub elbows with athletes like Sam Briggs, Mat Fraser, Stacie Tovar, Lauren Fisher and many other Games athletes. The event in Minnesota will be Sept 11-13, with the online qualifier beginning June 17. Use promo code MYCOMMUNITY (valid through May 15, 2015) for $5 off the qualifier registrations.
Saturday June 20 is the Sayre Park Open. Sayre Park is one of the most historic weight lifting clubs in the US and is located just outside of Oak Park. A USAW sanctioned event for all weightlifting abilities. If you are interested in signing up as a representative of Beverly Area Barbell Club please see me to get your training started.
As always, any comments or concerns can be addressed by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org. We will respond within 48 hours.
